Hummel & Co. Inc. is a professional soils consulting service and soil physical testing laboratory serving the golf course, sports field, and landscape industries. Started in 1991 as a small consulting venture, Hummel & Co. Inc is the most respected soil physical testing laboratory in the industry.

Dr. Norman Hummel, President and Owner of Hummel & Co. Inc., has over 35 years experience in the turf and landscape industry. He earned a PhD from the Pennsylvania State University in Agronomy with an emphasis in soil science. Since that time he worked on the faculties at Iowa State University (1982 - 1984) and Cornell University (1984 - 1995). From 1991 to 1993 Dr. Hummel worked with the United States Golf Association writing their greens construction specifications and the ASTM test methods used to evaluate sand based mixes for greens and sports fields. He is still active in ASTM in developing and improving test and construction standards for greens, sports fields, and green roofs. Dr. Hummel was the primary author of the ASTM Minimum Standards for the Maintenance of Cool Season Sports Fields.

Dr. Hummel will be the person who will review your test results, make the interpretation, write recommendations, and answer any follow-up questions.

Our philosophy is to work with our clients to solve their soil or landscape construction problems. We have no commercial affiliations. Therefore, our recommendations are completely unbiased. We can help you by testing your soils and making recommendations for improvement. We can design or engineer soils to meet certain properties, or assist you in writing a construction specification to make sure that the soils and drainage meet your expectations and budget.

Over the past several years we have serviced many of the top 100 golf courses, including over 60% of PGA Tour host golf courses. We have worked on several major league baseball fields, major league soccer, and NFL team stadiums and practice facilities. We have designed and tested soils for public parks and schools from Honolulu to Boston. We have tested the lightweight mixes used in the roof top gardens of prominent buildings throughout the country. We have also tested the shock absorbency (G-max) for hundreds of synthetic fields in the northeast and mid-Atlantic areas.

Hummel & Co Inc is international. We have provided testing services for projects in several countries on five continents.

Our lab is accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation for many of the test methods we offer. We also participate in the USGA Proficiency Testing Program. These are assurances the data produced by our lab meets the highest quality standards.
