Our Technical Staff

Dr. Norman Hummel is President and owner of Hummel & Co. Inc. Dr. Hummel (Norm) is a former assistant golf course superintendent (Park Club of Buffalo) with several years of golf course maintenance experience who went on to earn a Ph.D. degree from the Pennsylvania State University in Agronomy. At Penn State, Norm specialized in turfgrass nutrition and soils. Since then he has held faculty positions at Iowa State University (2 years) and Cornell University (11 years).

Over the past several years, Norm has written over 100 articles and research publications on many aspects of turfgrass management. He is a frequent speaker on state, regional, and national turfgrass conference programs.

From 1991 to 1993 Norm worked with the United States Golf Association, writing their greens construction specifications and the physical test methodology used for testing construction materials. He saw the procedures through the ASTM review process, and is still active in improving these and other test procedures used in the turfgrass industry.

In the area of sports field management, Norm is the primary author of the ASTM Minimum Standards for the Maintenance of Cool Season Sports Fields, and has published a guide on Athletic Field Maintenance.

Dr. Hummel (Norm) is a member of the Crop Science Society of Agronomy, the American Society of Testing and Materials, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Golf Course Builders Association of America, and the New York State Turfgrass Association. He was the 1995 recipient of the NYS Turfgrass Association Citation of Merit Award. He serves on the PGA Tour Agronomic Advisory Committee and the SUNY Delhi Plant Science Advisory Committee. To keep things in perspective, Norm is a Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Fighter.

Mary Thurn is the laboratory manager and consultant. Mary, who is a former golf course superintendent, earned both her Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science from Cornell University. Mary’s masters project was an evaluation of organic matter sources in golf course greens. In her research study she looked at the affect of organic matter sources on disease activity and at the changes in soil physical properties over time with different organic matter sources.

Before joining Hummel & Co., Mary worked for a brief time as an extension associate at Cornell where she prepared an extensive slide set on Lawn Care, as well as other teaching tools. She has been invited to speak at several seminars, conferences, and short courses.

Debbie Sender has been a laboratory technician at Hummel & Co. since May of 1996. Debbie, who holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture at Cornell, worked several years in the Turfgrass Science Program at Cornell as a research technician.
