Hummel & Co. offers a full range of soil physical testing. All tests include an interpretation at no additional cost to you. Below is a guide for selecting the testing services to suit your needs. See our current price list for pricing information, normal turnaround time, and quantities required.
Physical and Performance Tests - Lightweight Mixes
This is a suite of tests that provides a thorough evaluation of lightweight mixes for intensive, extensive, lawn, and other sites. It includes particle size distribution (ASTM C-117, C-136), organic matter (ASTM F1647, method 1, loss on ignition), pH (water), electrical conductivity (saturated paste), dry density, density at maximum water capacity, application density, saturated hydraulic conductivity (permeability), particle density (ASTM D5550), total porosity, and air and water filled porosity at maximum water capacity and at pF 1.8. All physical properties tested per ASTM E2399, unless noted.
Clay (< 2 µ) Content
Separation of the silt from clay by ASTM F1632 (pipette). Silt and clay are reported individually.
Water release study
We will determine water content at five points in a simulated dry down cycle. This test is helpful in determining the water release characteristics and actual plant available water in a mix.
Lightweight Aggregate Percentage
We will determine the percentage of lightweight aggregate on a volumetric basis.
Organic Matter Content of Soils and Mixes (ASTM F1647, method A)
Determination of organic matter by weight of soils and mixes.
Hummel & Co. offers several individual tests. See our price list for the complete list of services.
